Mineral scale

Salts become further concentrated in the concentrate and may precipitate when recovery, pH or antiscalant selection is incorrect.

Colloidal and organic fouling

Insufficient pretreatment, variable source-water quality and coagulant carry-over can affect pressure drop and flux.

Biofouling or chemical damage

Microbiological growth can form a tenacious layer; oxidants or unsuitable cleaning can permanently damage membranes.

Frequently asked questions

Technical choices require system context

These answers provide initial direction. The final approach follows from the installation data and product documentation.

Why are raw flow and pressure values not sufficient?

Temperature, feedwater quality, recovery and pressure change measured performance. Normalisation makes periods more comparable.

Should an RO system be cleaned as soon as permeate flow falls?

Not without context. First check normalisation, instrumentation, temperature, recovery and the pressure profile, then compare these with the membrane supplier's criteria.

What does it mean when CIP delivers progressively less recovery?

It may indicate the wrong cleaning route, cleaning too late, chemical damage or fouling that is not fully soluble. Root-cause analysis is then more important than repeating the same CIP.
